In 1994, Patricia Flores reached out to Broadview Emergency Shelter seeking refuge from domestic violence. Little did she know that this pivotal moment would not only provide safety but also ignite a lifelong commitment to community organizing and leadership in the sexual assault and domestic violence (DV) advocacy spheres.

Fleeing her hometown of Toppenish with her daughter and grandson, Patricia’s journey led her to Broadview, a shelter offering sanctuary to families escaping and recovering from DV. Though initially hesitant about relocating to a former military base, Patricia found solace in the compassionate care provided by Broadview’s staff.

“They made an appointment for us to come and do an intake. The workers there were really helpful and empathetic. They really knew how to work with people who are going through a crisis. I felt like our bubble was very respected,” recalls Patricia.

Beyond providing a safe haven, Broadview became a catalyst for Patricia’s personal and professional growth. Amidst her search for employment and housing, she stumbled upon a flyer for Seattle Rape Relief’s volunteer program. Intrigued by the opportunity, she embarked on a journey of advocacy and empowerment.

“I really believe that those of us who’ve been through such traumatic experiences, we connect, and we know who each other is,” reflects Patricia.

Her volunteer work with Seattle Rape Relief laid the groundwork for a remarkable career dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual assault and DV. From serving as supervisor of migrant education in Seattle Public Schools to her role as Advocacy Coordinator for the Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs, Patricia’s path exemplifies resilience and determination.

Patricia’s upbringing in an immigrant farmworker community instilled in her a sense of service and empathy. “That’s what we do in my community. We help each other, but I also believe as humans we’re born with certain aptitudes and strengths, and everybody’s gifts are unique,” she shares.

As she navigated her career, Patricia drew upon her Indigenous spirituality, viewing her ability to empathize as a gift from the Creator. This unwavering belief fueled her advocacy work and empowered her to lead trainings for sexual assault advocates across the state.

Despite facing challenges along the way, Patricia remained steadfast in her commitment to service and empowerment. Her journey from seeking refuge to becoming a beacon of hope for survivors is a testament to the transformative power of resilience and community support.

In every step of her journey, Patricia Flores embodies the spirit of empowerment, reminding us that from seeds of hope, profound impact can blossom.
