Emma Garcia, Chief Community Development and Engagement Officer at Valley of the Sun United Way, reflects on the power of collective action in fostering meaningful change. “Creating Mighty Change is so much greater than any one person or single organization—it takes an entire community and strong partners,” she emphasizes.
One such partner in this endeavor is UMOM New Day Centers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Through their collaboration with Valley of the Sun United Way, UMOM has provided crucial assistance to individuals like Felicia and her daughter, Sapphira.
Felicia’s journey is a testament to resilience and the transformative impact of support and resources. For five years, she navigated the harsh realities of homelessness while grappling with addiction. However, with the news of her pregnancy, Felicia found newfound determination to create a better life for herself and her child.
Initially hesitant to seek help, Felicia recalls her reluctance, “I did not want to get help. I was always doing everything on my own.” Yet, with the guidance of her mother, a mental health professional, and the support of UMOM, Felicia embarked on a journey of healing and self-discovery.
Under the compassionate guidance of her case manager, Sherry, at UMOM New Day Centers, Felicia made remarkable strides. Through job readiness programs, sobriety initiatives, and unwavering determination, Felicia overcame obstacles with grace and resilience.
Sherry speaks of Felicia’s journey with admiration, highlighting her commitment to building a brighter future. “Felicia has done great and she can’t underestimate what she’s done for herself. She’s going to be good,” Sherry affirms.
