In a world devoid of artistry, where verbal communication was limited to mere nods, and the notion of composing rock songs seemed like a distant dream, Kelly Stone’s story began. A photograph from his early years captures a young man, clad in a dark winter coat, against a backdrop of chain-link fence and a solitary telephone pole. Little did anyone know then, that within him lay a universe of creativity waiting to be unleashed.
Kelly’s journey truly began when he found his way to Arts of Life in 2003, after spending 13 years in state-run institutions. It was here, amidst a plethora of art materials, that his creativity blossomed. Denise Fisher, Co-Founder and Executive Director, remembers Kelly’s insatiable curiosity, a trait often found in individuals seeking to rediscover themselves. Kelly embraced every opportunity presented to him, saying “yes” to each with unwavering enthusiasm.
His openness paved the way for a newfound passion for art, as he meticulously honed his style and explored various color palettes. But it was his entry into the Arts of Life Band in the late 2000s that marked a significant turning point. Encouraged by former artistic director Karim Shuquem, Kelly embarked on a journey of lyrical expression, culminating in the creation of his hit song, “Puppies and Babies.”
With his confidence soaring, Kelly took to the stage, belting out harmonies over the roar of guitars and drums, captivating audiences across the city. Yet, it wasn’t just his musical prowess that flourished. Kelly emerged as a beacon of self-advocacy, actively voicing his desires and taking on leadership roles within the studio.
As the years passed, Kelly’s growth continued unabated. His journey of self-discovery found new avenues of expression, from printmaking to ceramics. And just when it seemed his story couldn’t get any more inspiring, Kelly made the bold decision to explore new horizons, transitioning to the North Shore studio.
Today, Kelly’s spirit remains indomitable as ever. Embracing each opportunity with gusto, he immerses himself in classes and community events, constantly pushing the boundaries of his creativity. Even amidst a global pandemic, Kelly’s resilience shines through, as he forges connections and finds solace in virtual gatherings.
In Kelly’s story, we find a testament to the transformative power of community and the boundless potential within each individual. His journey from silence to song serves as a reminder that with unwavering support and belief, anything is possible. As we celebrate Kelly’s achievements, we are reminded that the true essence of art lies not just in creation, but in the courage to say “yes” to the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
