Catholic Charities’ Support Group Helps Refugee Women Feel at Home

Refugees arrive in the United States not by choice but by necessity, seeking safety and a new start. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend is dedicated to making them feel welcome and supported in their new community.

“This is a community of ladies,” says Wendy DeLong, the refugee health case manager at Catholic Charities. “They can get to know friends or do a simple craft. We laugh together, we talk about children’s issues. This is a place where they can feel like they belong.”

DeLong played a key role in creating the weekly women’s refugee support group, part of the Refugee Support Services program. Launched in November, the group’s attendance varies, but its impact is consistently profound. Many of the women are stay-at-home moms, and the group provides a valuable opportunity for them to connect and access community resources.

“Sometimes when one shares something, other ladies are like, ‘Oh, I have the same problem, too,’” DeLong explains. “Then they realize it’s not just their problem. … It’s very encouraging.”

The group has already fostered meaningful connections. Two women discovered they were neighbors with children the same age, a realization that would not have happened without the support group. For many participants, language barriers and isolation are significant challenges, particularly when their husbands are at work.

Sessions range from crafting activities like crocheting to educational talks on social isolation, nutrition, and bullying in schools. Elisabeth Herbert, a refugee services case manager, highlights the group’s openness to Burmese women, the majority of local refugees aided by Catholic Charities, with plans to extend support to other refugee groups.

Initially, the language barrier made the program challenging. “Now, it’s honestly the highlight of my week,” Herbert shares. “We just pull out Google Translate and embrace those awkward silences and moments.”

Yasmin Mohamad Ali, a six-month attendee, appreciates the opportunity to improve her English and connect with others. Thuzar Aung, another regular participant, attends to meet new people and learn more English, resulting in new friendships.

In celebration of World Refugee Day, Catholic Charities will host an event on June 20 at the Allen County Public Library downtown. The event will feature refugee stories, lunch, and cultural activities, further fostering community and understanding. More details can be found online at ccfwsb.org/wrb.
