A Brighter Future: Transforming Lives at Denver Rescue Mission

Curtis and his children are one of many families to find support at the Mission’s Youth Center. Through intentional relationships and a safe environment, it’s not just a room to play in—it’s a lifeline for families living at The Crossing, offering hope and a better future.

In the heart of Denver, the Denver Rescue Mission is making a profound impact on families in crisis, offering them hope and a brighter future. One such story is that of Curtis and his three children, who found refuge and support at the Mission’s Youth Center.

Curtis, a single father to Skylar (10), Sophia (8), and Sebastien (6), arrived at the Mission with nowhere else to turn. The Youth Center, part of The Crossing, provides a safe and nurturing environment for children and teens, helping them build confidence, responsibility, and resilience. For Curtis, the support from the Youth Center staff was invaluable, especially for his son Sebastien, who is diagnosed with nonverbal autism spectrum disorder.

The Youth Center offers a variety of programs, including homework assistance and after-school activities, tailored to meet the needs of different age groups. This intentional approach ensures that each child receives the support they need to thrive. MC Crawford, the children, youth, and family manager, describes the Youth Center as a “space of respite” where kids can express themselves and develop their identities.

Curtis has seen significant growth in his children since joining the Youth Center. His daughters have embraced the social environment, making friends and blossoming in their new community. Sebastien has benefited from the resources and therapies provided, including speech therapy, which has helped him learn some sign language.

The Mission’s commitment to being trauma-informed and intentional in their support is evident in their work. Joy McGuire-Olson, associate clinical director, emphasizes the importance of building resilience and facilitating positive experiences for both children and their parents.

For Curtis, the combination of counseling, case management, and the Youth Center’s programs has been life-changing. He is grateful for the safe space and the opportunities it provides for his children to learn, grow, and build a better future.

The Denver Rescue Mission continues to be a beacon of hope for families like Curtis’, offering them the support they need to overcome challenges and create a brighter future.
