In an inspiring display of community spirit and generosity, the Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC), a teen-led nonprofit, has shattered a Guinness World Record by donating over 21,000 pairs of shoes to underserved women and children. This remarkable achievement was made possible through a partnership with Jellypop, a female-founded footwear brand based in Los Angeles.
The Event and Its Impact
The record-breaking event took place at the Sharp Healthcare Spectrum Center in San Diego on December 7, 2024. Hundreds of volunteers gathered to distribute the shoes, along with backpacks and toys, to thousands of women and children in need. The event was not just about setting a record but also about creating a memorable and impactful experience for both the recipients and the volunteers.
Augustus Holm, the founder of YPC, expressed his enthusiasm: “By purposely making this a live event, we hope to not only provide new shoes for women and toys for children but also create a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our youth volunteers, raising awareness and inspiring future generations of givers.”
Addressing a Critical Need
The donation event comes at a crucial time, as many families continue to face economic hardships. Christina Jordan, Chief Development Officer for Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus, highlighted the importance of such initiatives: “Making a positive impact on the lives of San Diegans and their families is central to Sharp HealthCare’s mission. We are so pleased to facilitate community service initiatives like these and support those in need.”
The Role of Youth Philanthropy Council
Founded in 2019, the Youth Philanthropy Council has quickly become California’s largest youth-run nonprofit. The organization is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty through impactful initiatives in healthcare, education, and community support. Led entirely by teens, YPC has raised over $3 million in donations and spearheaded numerous projects, including the record-breaking “St. Nick’s Kicks” event.
YPC’s efforts extend beyond this event. They have been involved in various community projects, such as collaborating with San Ysidro Health, creating community murals, and providing COVID-19 relief. These initiatives empower young people to make a lasting impact, proving that age is no barrier to meaningful change.
Looking Ahead
With the success of this event, YPC and Jellypop are already planning future initiatives to continue their mission of supporting underserved communities. They are calling for more volunteers and donations to help expand their reach and impact.
