Teen Uses Birthday Money to Feed Hundreds of Homeless Neighbors

In San Diego, a teenager turned a personal celebration into a powerful act of service — using his birthday money to feed people experiencing homelessness across the city.

16-year-old Mateo Rodriguez had originally planned to spend his birthday funds on a new gaming console. But after volunteering at a local shelter with his family, he changed course.

Instead, Mateo used the money to purchase food, hygiene supplies, and bottled water. With help from friends and family, he assembled and distributed hundreds of care packages throughout the community.

What started as a one-day effort quickly grew. Inspired by Mateo’s actions, neighbors and local organizations contributed additional supplies, allowing the initiative to continue beyond his birthday.

Mateo said the experience changed how he sees giving. “It just felt better than anything I was going to buy.”

There’s something powerful about a moment when perspective shifts — when “what do I want?” becomes “what can I give?” Mateo’s choice reflects a kind of clarity that cuts through noise and reminds us what fulfillment actually looks like. Heartitude lives in that decision point — choosing impact over instant gratification, and discovering that giving doesn’t deplete us, it expands us.

Local volunteers are now working to make the effort a recurring outreach program.
