Two Indiana firefighters never expected national attention for what they considered a simple neighborly act.
While driving through a South Bend neighborhood, firefighters Cody MacLeod and Bryan Haskel noticed an American flag lying on the ground after strong winds had apparently torn it from a porch.
Rather than ignore it, the pair stopped, carefully folded the flag in military style, and placed it respectfully back near the homeowner’s porch.
What they didn’t realize was that the homeowner, Tyler Gillean, witnessed the entire interaction through his Ring camera while away at the airport.
Moved by the gesture, Gillean later shared the footage publicly, praising the firefighters for taking the time to care for something that wasn’t theirs.
MacLeod and Haskel, both from military families, downplayed the attention afterward, saying they simply believed in helping neighbors whenever possible.
In a news cycle often dominated by conflict and outrage, the story stood out precisely because it was small, quiet, and sincere.
