Liberty Mutual Foundation Commits $600 Million to Strengthen Nonprofits and Communities

BOSTON — In a significant demonstration of long-term corporate compassion, the Liberty Mutual Foundation announced the creation of a $600 million endowment designed to provide sustained support for nonprofit organizations serving communities across the United States.

The endowment arrives at a time when many nonprofit organizations face increasing demand for services while confronting uncertainty in funding streams. According to the Associated Press, the new fund is intended to provide reliable resources for organizations addressing housing stability, workforce development, climate resilience, and other critical community needs.

Founded in 2003, the Liberty Mutual Foundation has supported hundreds of nonprofit organizations through grants and community partnerships. The new endowment represents one of the largest commitments of its kind by a corporate foundation and is expected to increase annual charitable giving beyond the organization’s typical grantmaking levels.

The announcement reflects a growing recognition among some corporate leaders that community well-being depends on long-term investments rather than short-term charitable responses. By creating a permanent source of funding, Liberty Mutual aims to provide nonprofit partners with greater stability and flexibility as they address evolving community challenges.

“We all know that we live in really challenging times. And that is very true for our nonprofit partners as well,” said Melanie Foley, chair of the Liberty Mutual Foundation board, in comments reported by the Associated Press. “We’ll be there to continue to support them, be as flexible as we can be, really listening to what they need.”

The endowment will support organizations working in areas closely aligned with the company’s expertise and community priorities, including housing, economic opportunity, and resilience initiatives. AP reported that the foundation has historically partnered with organizations such as the American Red Cross and Boys & Girls Clubs while supporting hundreds of local nonprofits.

The initiative demonstrates how corporate philanthropy can move beyond traditional giving models by creating lasting resources that help communities withstand future challenges. As nonprofits nationwide navigate increased demand for services, commitments like this provide a measure of certainty that allows organizations to focus on mission delivery and community impact.

Bruce Petillo, founder of Heartitude, said the announcement illustrates the power of compassion when it is paired with long-term commitment.

“True compassion isn’t measured by a single act of generosity. It’s measured by the willingness to stand with people through the challenges ahead. When organizations invest in the future of their communities, they create hope that extends far beyond any one grant or donation.”
