Heartitude Perspective: Real Strength Means Standing Up When a Woman Is Dehumanized

At a UFC event held on the White House grounds, a fighter used his post-fight interview to repeat a false and demeaning claim about former First Lady Michelle Obama. Regardless of political affiliation, ideology, or personal opinion, the moment should concern anyone who values human dignity. Not because it involved a former First Lady, but because it reflected something much larger happening in our culture—the growing acceptance of public disrespect as entertainment.

From a Heartitude perspective, this moment is not about politics. It is about humanity.

We live in a time when many people have come to believe that if they disagree with someone politically, morally, or philosophically, they no longer owe that person basic respect. The result is a culture where ridicule increasingly replaces dialogue, insults replace thoughtful disagreement, and dehumanization is excused as humor. Yet kindness, compassion, and empathy are not values reserved only for those who share our beliefs. They are values that reveal our character when we encounter those with whom we disagree.

No one is asking people to agree with Michelle Obama. In a healthy democracy, disagreement is expected and even necessary. People should feel free to challenge policies, question ideas, and engage in spirited debate. But there is a profound difference between criticizing someone’s views and attacking their humanity. When public figures become targets of comments designed to diminish their dignity rather than address their ideas, we all lose something.

Words matter because they shape culture.

Every time a public figure is mocked, demeaned, or reduced to something less than fully human, a message is sent that such behavior is acceptable. The target may be a former First Lady today. Tomorrow it may be a colleague, a neighbor, a student, or someone in our own family. What we tolerate publicly eventually influences how we treat one another personally.

This is especially true when the target is a woman.

When a woman’s identity, appearance, or humanity becomes the subject of ridicule, the impact extends far beyond that individual. Every woman watching receives a message about her value. Every young girl learns something about what society considers acceptable. Every mother, daughter, sister, and wife witnesses whether respect is truly a shared value or merely a convenient slogan.

This is why men must play an active role in confronting these moments.

Too often, disrespect toward women is met with silence. Many men would never personally make such comments, yet they remain quiet when others do. Unfortunately, silence can communicate acceptance. It can signal that disrespect is not serious enough to challenge. Over time, that silence helps normalize behavior that should never become normal.

Men have a unique opportunity to influence other men. A culture changes when people have the courage to speak up and establish a higher standard. Sometimes leadership is not found in grand speeches or public declarations. Sometimes leadership looks like a simple statement: “That’s not okay.”

Real masculinity has never been about humiliating others. It has never been about proving dominance through insults or gaining attention by tearing someone down. The strongest men most of us have known are remembered for something entirely different. They are remembered for their integrity, their character, and their willingness to protect the dignity of others. They are remembered for standing up when remaining silent would have been easier.

At Heartitude, we believe kindness is one of the greatest expressions of strength. Compassion requires courage. Empathy requires maturity. Respect requires discipline. It takes very little effort to join a crowd that is mocking someone. It takes far more strength to stand apart from the crowd and defend another person’s humanity.

The challenge facing our society today is not a lack of opinions. We have plenty of those. What we are increasingly lacking is the ability to disagree without dehumanizing one another. The future of our communities, our workplaces, our families, and our nation depends upon our willingness to restore that balance.

Imagine how different our public conversations would become if every leader, athlete, commentator, and citizen embraced one simple principle: Never sacrifice another person’s humanity for a laugh, a headline, or a round of applause.

That principle would not eliminate disagreement. It would not erase political differences. It would not require anyone to abandon deeply held convictions. What it would do is remind us that every person deserves dignity, regardless of where they stand on any issue.

The true measure of character is not how we treat people we admire. It is how we treat people we oppose. If kindness disappears the moment disagreement begins, then it was never truly kindness at all.

This moment is bigger than one athlete, one comment, or one public figure. It is a test of who we are becoming. Will we continue rewarding disrespect because it entertains us, or will we choose a higher standard? Will we remain silent when women are demeaned, or will we have the courage to speak up?

At Heartitude, we believe the answer matters. Every time a man challenges disrespect, every time a person chooses dignity over division, and every time we refuse to participate in the dehumanization of another human being, we help create a culture that is healthier, stronger, and more united.

The future we build will be shaped by what we tolerate today.

May we have the wisdom to recognize disrespect for what it is, the courage to confront it when we see it, and the compassion to lead from the heart.
