St, Anthony’s Empowering Women Through the STEPS Program: Cookie’s Journey of Resilience and Renewal

As Volunteer Appreciation Month unfolds, St. Anthony’s proudly shines a spotlight on the remarkable individuals within its volunteer community. Among them stands Cookie, a beacon of strength and inspiration, whose journey from adversity to empowerment embodies the transformative impact of the STEPS (St. Anthony’s Employment Pathways to Success) program.

Designed to address unemployment, homelessness, and life transitions, STEPS goes beyond job training to foster economic independence, personal growth, and community involvement. For Cookie, STEPS became a lifeline, guiding her toward stability and self-sufficiency while nurturing her aspirations for a brighter future.

Cookie’s story begins in the vibrant yet challenging streets of San Francisco’s Sunnydale neighborhood, where she navigated the complexities of her Samoan and Mexican heritage amid personal struggles. Sent to Colorado to break free from a toxic environment, she underwent a profound period of self-discovery following the loss of her grandfather. Determined to turn her life around, Cookie returned to San Francisco, juggling multiple jobs while battling recurring episodes of homelessness.

In 2021, as a young single mother-to-be, Cookie found herself at a crossroads, seeking support from Catholic Charities and eventually finding refuge at the Jelani House—a sanctuary for pregnant women facing homelessness. With their guidance, she secured housing and embarked on a journey of resilience and renewal.

The turning point came when Cookie discovered an opportunity at St. Anthony Foundation through the STEPS program. Despite initial setbacks, her persistence paid off, and she joined as a transitional employee, eager to build a stable future for herself and her daughter, Emiliana.

Starting in Guest Services, Cookie honed valuable skills interacting with St. Anthony’s clients, impressing her supervisors with her dedication and work ethic. Recognizing her potential, they encouraged her to apply for a full-time role, leading to her appointment as a volunteer coordinator.

In her new position, Cookie manages and collaborates with the volunteers who play a vital role in St. Anthony’s mission. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasizes the significance of Volunteer Services in facilitating community engagement and making a meaningful impact.

Cookie’s success underscores the holistic approach of programs like STEPS, which prioritize not only job placement but also personal development and stability. Through the unwavering support of organizations like the Jelani House and St. Anthony Foundation, she navigates the challenges of young motherhood and financial insecurity with resilience and determination.

Her story illuminates the transformative potential of social service initiatives, highlighting the importance of compassion, community, and the profound impact of lifting others in need. As Cookie continues to flourish, her journey serves as a testament to the power of empowerment and the promise of a brighter future for all.
