The Arizona Sunshine Angels are making a significant impact in the Phoenix metro area by providing crucial support to at-risk youth during their formative adolescent years. These young individuals, often emerging from challenging backgrounds, face a heightened risk of encountering homelessness, drug abuse, gang involvement, unplanned pregnancy, unemployment, and criminal activity, which can lead to incarceration after leaving the foster care system. These unfortunate outcomes contribute to the cycle of crime and poverty in the community, ultimately imposing a burden on taxpayers. With approximately 14,000 children currently in Arizona’s foster care system, the majority of whom reside in the Phoenix area, the need for intervention is pressing.
The Angels’ efforts focus on providing both emotional and practical support to foster youth, significantly influencing the lives of these children. On any given day, around 700 children are living in residential home facilities under the care of the Arizona Sunshine Angels. However, due to the transient nature of the foster care system, approximately 1,000 children transition in and out of these facilities each year, with the average stay being around 15 months. Since their inception in 1999, the Arizona Sunshine Angels have made a difference in the lives of nearly 20,000 children, offering them hope and support during challenging times.
Working in collaboration with 12 residential group home agencies across the Valley of the Sun, the Arizona Sunshine Angels provide essential care and love to foster children. These children, rescued by the Department of Child Safety (DCS), are placed in foster group homes as a temporary solution while a more permanent arrangement is sought. Despite being removed from their familiar surroundings for their safety, these children show remarkable resilience and hope for the future. The group homes, supported by the Arizona Sunshine Angels, offer a clean, safe, and structured environment, helping to stabilize the lives of these young individuals.
Through their dedicated efforts, the Arizona Sunshine Angels not only provide immediate support to these children but also work towards breaking the cycle of poverty and instability that many foster youth face. Their work is an invaluable part of the community, offering a brighter future for the most vulnerable members of society. By addressing the needs of these children, the Arizona Sunshine Angels help build a stronger, safer, and more supportive community for all.
