AUSTIN, Texas — Superior HealthPlan, a leading managed care organization in Texas, has invested more than $700,000 since 2020 to establish and support community hygiene closets across the state. This initiative provides essential personal care items such as diapers, deodorant, shampoo, and laundry detergent at no cost to families in need.
The program, which began in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, has since expanded due to positive community feedback. Superior HealthPlan partners with numerous community-based organizations to ensure these closets remain stocked, addressing a critical need for items not covered by programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
“As some families continue to struggle with buying basic supplies, this initiative has been a lifeline for communities all across our state,” said Susan Mills, senior vice president of population health and clinical operations at Superior HealthPlan. The organization’s commitment aims to transform the health of Texas communities by addressing social determinants of health and providing vital resources directly where they are needed.
One such hygiene closet in Tyler, Texas, supported by Superior, aligns with the mission of improving the health of mothers and babies, according to Tecora Smith, director of the NET Health Women, Infants and Children (WIC) department.
