GLENSIDE, Pa. — A Glenside family facing a rare genetic illness received a new roof at no cost, thanks to a donation from Home Genius Exteriors.
The Rivera family, whose three children have been diagnosed with progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC), reached out to the company after discovering water damage in their home following recent storms. A full roof replacement was needed, but the family was unable to afford the repairs due to mounting medical expenses.
Angela Rivera contacted the company in hopes of finding a solution. Her message caught the attention of Home Genius Exteriors CEO Jeff Gunhus.
“As a father of five, I was moved by the story of the Rivera family,” Gunhus said. “We are proud to support the families in the communities we serve, and we hope this small gesture helps ease their burden.”
The company covered all costs through its charitable initiative, Home Genius Cares, which provides support to families in need. Crews completed the installation shortly after the donation was approved.
Angela Rivera said the gift brought relief during a difficult time.
“We were trying so hard to find a way to make it work, but with everything happening, it just felt out of reach,” she said. “This act of kindness made an overwhelming situation feel a little less heavy and gave us hope when we needed it most.”
The family’s challenges began in 2022 when their oldest child, then 3, was diagnosed with PFIC. Within a year, their two younger children were also diagnosed. A recent cancer diagnosis in the family has added to their emotional and financial strain.
“This is what community means — showing up, asking ‘How can I help?’ and offering support when it’s needed most,” said Austin Killian, co-founder and executive vice president of Home Genius Exteriors. “The Rivera family’s story reminds us why we do what we do.”
