The Moment I Turned Around: How a Simple Act of Kindness Changed My Sunday

This past Sunday, I was walking through the parking lot of Home Depot, the Arizona sun already warming the pavement beneath my feet. I was in my own little world, thinking about the to-do list waiting for me at home, when I passed an older gentleman loading his car.

He had two large bags of wood chips—heavy ones—and was clearly struggling a bit. As I walked by, I smiled and said hello. He nodded back, but there was something in his expression that caught me. A flicker of fatigue, maybe. Or quiet frustration. I took a few more steps, then stopped.

Something in me said, Go back.

So I turned around and asked, “Would you like a hand with that?”

His face lit up with gratitude. “Yes, thank you,” he said, almost surprised. I helped him lift the bags into his trunk. It took less than a minute. But the impact? It lingered.

The Power of the Little Things

That moment reminded me how powerful the little things can be. A smile. A pause. A helping hand. These aren’t grand gestures. They’re small, human moments that ripple outward.

Research backs this up. A 2022 study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that people consistently underestimate how much their small acts of kindness mean to others. In fact, recipients of kind gestures reported significantly higher levels of appreciation than the givers expected.

Another study from Harvard Business School showed that people who perform daily acts of kindness experience increased happiness and a stronger sense of purpose. It’s not just good for others—it’s good for us.

Heartitude in Action

At its core, this is what Heartitude is all about: living with heart, with intention, and with compassion. It’s not about being perfect or doing something heroic. It’s about choosing empathy in the everyday.

Holding the door for someone. Letting a car merge in traffic. Sending a quick message to check in on a friend. These are the building blocks of a more connected, caring society.

So here’s my challenge to you: This week, do one small thing each day for someone else. It doesn’t have to be big. Just intentional. Just kind.

Smile at a stranger. Compliment a coworker. Help someone load their car.

And when you do, don’t underestimate the impact. Because those little things? They’re not so little after all.
